The Foundation: John Giaier
John Giaier’s journey began in the 1970s hard-rock underground. He honed his sound with his band Master Danse at the Wayne State Cinema Theater, releasing a live recording that still sells today. By the mid-’80s, he transitioned to Elephant Recording Studio, where he would record rock music legends KISS. John soon leveraged his recording and writing ability to build a national jingle empire, earning a front-page Wall Street Journal profile as the "Henry Ford of custom music." However, his most enduring project arrived when he bridged his commercial mastery with timeless devotion to create the Rosary Tapes project. Captured at Studio A by multi-platinum engineers, the work was so resonant it earned a Papal Blessing from Pope John Paul II—a testament to faith meeting craft.
The Heartbeat: Billy Craig
To anchor the project’s energy, John turned to Billy Craig—a veteran of the Detroit circuit and lead guitarist for the legendary Brownsville Station. His guitar work has been on major-market radio, and he has toured overseas and across the USA. Billy’s solo work is a mix of rock and Americana and represents a career-long search for melody and meaning with albums like Black Swan Theory and Sonic Tunesmith. He adds a fiery guitar sound that enhances the cinematic textures that define the Upon This Rock experience.
REIMAGINED
Today, the original tapes are reborn as Upon This Rock Rosary. Recorded in Detroit's legendary Studio A and remastered by original engineer Eric Morgeson. The experience merges shimmering guitars with cinematic soundscapes, echoing the spaciousness of Pink Floyd and the warmth of Tom Petty.
From Motor City rock clubs to the global charts, the "Detroit Sound" has always balanced grit with Grace. Upon This Rock Rosary is the culmination of that heritage—an inspired fusion of faith and rock created by two of the city’s most accomplished guitarist-producers: John Giaier and Billy Craig.
